Kyokushin kumite is not won on accumulated points: it is won by ippon, by two waza-ari (awase-ippon), by hantei (3 votes of 5, damage first) or by the opponent's terminal sanction. And the lineage's most widespread trap is a genuine divergence: « two genten = shikkaku » is FALSE at IKO (2023) and TRUE at WKO/EKO (2018) — both rulebooks exist, each at home.

The victory paths — with no points tally

  • Ippon — a legal technique that "downs the opponent for more than three seconds, or results in the opponent's loss of his will to fight" (IKO §B.3). The bout stops.
  • Waza-ari — the same for less than three seconds, or a clear stagger from damage without a fall (IKO §C.4; the EKO adds a downing sweep followed by a focused non-contact technique).
  • Awase-ippon — "Two declarations of a half-point, constitute a full-point victory" (IKO §C.11).
  • Hantei — the decision: valid at 3 votes of 5 (IKO §D.13), criteria damage → effective technique & defence → aggressiveness and attitude (§D.14). A genten ichi offsets one waza-ari at the decision (§15). The EKO prioritises waza-ari → damage → number of techniques → fighting spirit (Art. 8.9–8.13).
  • By default — the opponent's Hansoku-Make, Shikkaku or Kiken (withdrawal) (§A.2).

« Two genten = shikkaku » circulates everywhere — and is true only at WKO/EKO. At IKO 2023, two genten make a loss by Hansoku-Make, and Shikkaku is a separate track (which can void placement). Cite your event's organisation, never « kyokushin ».

The fouls

The family is shared (IKO §19, 23 classes; EKO Art. 9): hand or elbow to the face/neck (ganmen-ouda — feints allowed) · groin kicks (kin-geri) · head-butts (zutsuki) · attacking a downed opponent (except the codified no/light-contact gedan-tsuki) · spine attacks · hooking (kake) · grabbing the dogi (tsukami) · holding (kakae-komi) · throws (nage) · face/neck pushing, repeated pushing (oshi) · chest-to-chest inactivity · kakenige (hit-and-run) · jogai (stepping out) · attacking after « yame » · frontal knee-joint attacks · attire/etiquette · faking injury.

Officials: 1 referee + 4 corner judges, majority 3 of 5 (EKO Art. 5; IKO the same — the IFK adds an arbitrator). EKO area: an 8 m square with a safety zone of at least 1 m.

The youth rules

See "Fundamentals by age & contact" for the full ladder — the essentials in three lines: the IKO under-15 layer removes pushing, sweeps and floor attacks; the WKO/EKO grades the head (touch below cadet, controlled under helmet at cadet/junior, full at U-21); and a head KO at cadet/junior = automatic Shikkaku. At the EKO, a head KO also triggers a medical suspension of at least 3 months, recorded in the fighter's passport (Art. 1.5).

Frequently asked questions

How many points is a waza-ari worth?
None — kyokushin has no points tally. The waza-ari is a counted event: two make awase-ippon and the win; a single one weighs at hantei (where a genten ichi offsets it, IKO §15). It is an event system, not WKF arithmetic.
Two genten — shikkaku or hansoku-make?
It depends on the organisation — the lineage's sharpest divergence. IKO 2023: Genten Ni = Hansoku-Make, distinct from Shikkaku. WKO/EKO 2018: Genten Ni = Shikkaku. Both sentences circulate because each is true at home.
Does tameshiwari really decide bouts?
Yes, at the end of the chain: when the extensions have not decided, the scale then the board count settle it (IKO §18; EKO open, Art. 6). That is why breaking remains a graded adults' event — and a genuine tournament meta-game.
