KYOKUSHIN COACHING Reading time : 9 min Updated September 7, 2026

Kata carries roughly half of the kyokushin grading program — and "repeat the form" is not a pedagogy. The canon advances from Taikyoku to Pinan then Sanchin/Tenshō and the advanced kata, in two families that are not coached the same way — and its grade placement is an organisation's fact: Sanchin is examined at blue for IKO, at green for IFK/IKKU.

The canon, in order

Two families, two pedagogies

  • The dynamic kata (Taikyoku, Pinan, Gekisai…) are coached on embusen, transition and kime — short segments, slow count, then flow.
  • The breathing kata (Sanchin, Tenshō) are coached on structure and breath — ibuki (exhalation under tension) and nogare (soft breath). Never coach Sanchin like a Pinan — and for the youngest, breathing is introduced gently, without shime (the light-percussion structure test remains an adult tool).

The grade placement differs by organisation

KataIKO (2011 syllabus)IFK / IKKU
Taikyoku Sono IchiWhite belt9th kyu (red — their 10th–9th is red, not orange)
Pinan Sono IchiBlue (8th kyu)7th kyu (blue)

Same kata, different grade — that is normal. A dojo's program follows ITS organisation's syllabus; the comparison above exists so no single column is ever presented as « kyokushin ». Kyokushin-kan even classes Pinan-ura and Tsuki no Kata as additional exercises, outside promotion requirements.

The five correction mechanisms

  1. Segmentation — isolate a sequence, perfect the transition, reassemble;
  2. Count-and-flow — slow count for form, linked runs for rhythm;
  3. Mirror work — instructor or partner opposite, for embusen and timing;
  4. Ura — the turning variants (Taikyoku ura at IKO green), balance under rotation;
  5. Paired bunkai — the application with a partner, no or light contact for the young: the kata becomes understood fighting again.

Frequently asked questions

When should Sanchin be introduced to young students?
The examination placement depends on the organisation (blue at IKO, green at IFK/IKKU) — but ibuki and shime are not taught to the youngest: for them, install the hourglass stance and calm breathing, without forced tension or the structure test.
Does kata count in competition?
Some organisations run kata events (the EKO references a kata competition area, the IFK has its pool system) — judged on execution quality, never on knockdown criteria. The detailed per-organisation scoring scales are not freely published, so read your event's ruleset.
