Periodizing the season
- Off-season: rebuild capacities. In Danish first-division women, eight weeks of undulating heavy resistance training improved lower-limb muscle function.
- Pre-season (general → specific): build work capacity, then convert it into handball-specific power.
- In-season: maintain. In professional men, load peaks at MD+2 and MD−3 and tapers toward MD−1 — train hard far from the match, light near it.
- Late season / playoffs: cut volume, keep intensity.
Block or traditional periodization? In elite women, block periodization beat traditional on some measures (squat jump), but the wider literature is mixed. Both are legitimate — choose by calendar and resources, without dogma.
Periodization across the season
Volume and intensity evolve by phase — down to the taper before the big dates.
In-season, load runs on match-day-relative microcycles (MD): peak at MD+2, then taper toward MD-1. Block vs traditional: both are legitimate, the evidence is nuanced.
Youth and loading
Movement skills, coordination, agility and speed first; loaded strength and power come after peak height velocity. Youth resistance training is safe and beneficial when supervised and age-appropriate (NSCA and AAP positions): no evidence of growth-plate harm, and a child ready for organized sport (~7–8) can do bodyweight, technique-first work. Progression: technique → bodyweight → light resistance → load. The French federation's 8–15 referential says it in two words: "sans charge" — without load.
Preventing the knee (ACL)
Handball is a pivoting-and-landing sport — the ACL is its weak point, especially for women. Neuromuscular training (balance, strength, plyometrics, landing technique) is among sport's best-proven preventions: a 2025 PRISMA meta-analysis (Annals of Medicine) measured a 22% reduction in knee injuries and 50% in ACL injuries (RR 0.50), with the strongest effect for sessions of over 15 minutes, 2–3 times a week, at ≥75% compliance. The real-world obstacle is adherence — build the block into the warm-up; don't make it optional.

Landing quality beats jump height · knees track over the toes. Evidence: neuromuscular training cuts knee-injury risk by 22% and ACL-rupture risk by ~50%.
The thrower's shoulder
Thousands of throws per season wear down the throwing chain. The standard program targets three links: the rotator cuff (banded external rotations), the scapular stabilizers (rows, YTWs) and the trunk (rotational core work). Swedish "Shoulder Control"-type programs are the reference. Add ankle proprioception to complete handball's injury triad.

Monitoring load
At minimum: session RPE (effort 1–10 × duration) to objectify internal load week over week. Elite setups add IMUs and positioning systems for external load, plus match-day-relative microcycles in congested periods. For an amateur club: log RPE, watch the spikes, and beware two-match weeks.
