There is no single minimum age
Start from the fact that boxing has no single governing authority, so there is no “boxing rule.” The amateur/Olympic world is split between World Boxing (IOC-recognised, it governs the boxing tournament at LA 2028) and the de-recognised IBA (ex-AIBA). Every national federation Paak targets — FFBoxe, Swiss Boxing, the Belgian federation, Germany’s DBV, Austria’s ÖBV, USA Boxing — sits with World Boxing, yet each keeps its own youth rules. “Which body, which ruleset” is a setting to choose, never a constant.
The direct consequence: the minimum competition age is itself a disagreement. The values do not converge — they contradict:

And the age at which full head contact and the KO are first permitted differs just as much: ~12 (Minime) under FFBoxe · 13 for hard head blows under Swiss J+S · 10–11 with headgear and early stoppages under the DBV and ÖBV · 8 with headgear and tight matchmaking under USA Boxing and Belgium. Swiss J+S bans head strikes entirely under age 8.
Age categories, federation by federation
One trap first: every body computes age by year of birth, not by birthday — except two, USA Boxing’s Pee-Wee (which uses the actual birth date for the age-8 floor) and Belgium’s Aspirant (“juiste datum,” the exact date). Here are the published ladders, with the source ages.

u9, u13, u17, sen — and where no band is clean
Paak sorts categories into four bands — u9 ≈ 5–8 · u13 ≈ 9–12 · u17 ≈ 13–16 · sen ≈ 17+. These are product markers, published by no federation: always keep the federation’s own category (Minime, Pee-Wee, U15…) next to the band, never instead of it. Three cases where the band does not land cleanly, and which must be said out loud:
- u9 has no competition category at all under World Boxing, the IBA and the ÖBV, and only a touch / light-contact offering under FFBoxe (BEA), Switzerland (J+S Light-Contact) and the DBV (Leichtkontakt). Only USA Boxing (Pee-Wee) and Belgium (Aspirant) run a full-contact format at this age — and even there it is headgear, tight age-matching, and in Belgium technical-only results.
- The 13-year-old straddles the u13/u17 boundary. Depending on federation, they are already in combat (FFBoxe Minime, 12–13) or on the very first rung (World Boxing / DBV: U13/U15). Age 13 is where World Boxing’s ladder starts but where FFBoxe combat has already opened.
- The 17-year-old lands in Paak “sen,” yet every federation still classes 17 as youth (FFBoxe Junior 2, U19, Youth): headgear-mandatory, not the bare-headed elite. A Paak “sen” session must never assume elite rules (bare head, 3×3′) for a 17-year-old.
The children’s formats, as federations define them
The children’s formats are not boxing softened to the coach’s judgement: each federation defines them, often word for word. Here they are, verbatim where possible.

This is the heart of the guide. Here, by age band, is when each federation first opens head contact and the KO — never flattening the disagreement.

What it means for your session
The operating rule fits in one sentence: a full-contact sparring drill scheduled onto a band a federation gates as non-contact is a safety violation, not an intensity variant. In practice:
- u9 × full-contact sparring → exclude. Under FFBoxe only touch (BEA) exists before Minime; Swiss J+S bans head strikes under 8; World Boxing, the IBA and the ÖBV have no category under 11–13. At this age, fill the “sparring” slot with touch-only work: sensitisation, defensive reaction games, pad or partner touch games. Everything straight, hook, combination is trained on the pad, the bag, in shadow — safe at any age.
- Lower u13 (ages 9–11) × full-contact sparring → exclude under FFBoxe and Switzerland, permit (gated) under BE / DE / AT / US. FFBoxe opens combat only at Minime (~12); Switzerland gates hard head blows to 13. But Belgium (Aspirant), the DBV (Schüler from 10), the ÖBV (from 11) and the USA (from 8) do run gated full contact. The gate therefore depends on your club’s federation — decide it before you plan, not during.
What Paak does, and what it does not. Paak plans and records the session for free, and the session sheet prints on Paak One. What Paak does not do is decide the contact gate for you: the gate is a federation rule, not a software setting — and that is exactly what this guide puts in writing, federation by federation.
Medical certificate and licence, for minors
The contact gate is not the only one. Boxing, even in training, presupposes a licence and a medical clearance — and for minors the federations add more.
